Scientific paper

On theoretical and experimental ground it is shown that the occurrence rate of distant (r >= 2000 km) positive cloud-to-ground (+CG) lightning discharges can be sufficient for excitation of the ionospheric Alfvén resonator (IAR) to intensities which make the resonance signatures observable on the ground. In this evaluation the efficiency of +CG lightning discharges for the excitation of IAR was proven to be considerably enhanced due to long-lasting, strong-continuing currents associated with +CG events as compared to the case of excitation by negative cloud-to-ground lightning discharges.
