There are a number of recent reviews on interstellar molecules and interstellar chemistry. The purpose in this paper is not to duplicate the others although some degree of repetition cannot be avoided. The authors wish in particular to develop some examples in detail after a number of basic ideas and a rapid overview of the subject have been given. The problems related to the identification of interstellar molecules form the second chapter. The third one deals with observational aspects and stresses the importance of molecules as probes of the physical conditions in the interstellar medium. The physics of natural molecular masers will remain almost untouched in this review. The bases of interstellar chemistry are developed in the fourth chapter. Some selected examples of interstellar molecules are then discussed from the various points of view.
