The exceptionally thin pulsating auroral patches observed by
Stenbaek-Nielsen and Hallinan (1979) may be caused by an ionization
instability occurring at the end of the range of precipitating
electrons. A comparison is made to laboratory results reported by
Johnson et al. (1990).
