Charged particle observations from Exos-D of upflowing ion conics with energies of up to 100 eV and its response to quickly varying electron precipitation are reported. The low energy particle instrument aboard the Exos-D satellite has often observed upflowing ion conics in the polar magnetosphere. Contour maps are presented of phase space density distribution at selected time intervals for the purpose of studying the energy-pitch angle characteristics of the upflowing ions. Even though elevated conics can also be produced by the velocity filter and the effect of large heating region, the intimate relation of the elevated conics and beams indicates acceleration by a parallel electric field. It is shown that reduction of the anistropic heating occurs in the large or long-lived region of electron precipitation.
