A method is developed for investigating the linear instability stage in an artificial plasma cloud. The efficiency of gradient-drift instability in a barium ion cloud is evaluated quantitatively. It is shown that, given certain optimal relations of the background ionosphere and the barium cloud, the maximum increment can reach a value of 0.1/s, which makes it possible to describe the stratification processes from the standpoint of plasma-instability development.
