Scientific paper

A nonstationary model for the spatiotemporal distribution of electron temperature at heights of 95-140 km in the auroral ionosphere is presented, which includes collisional energy release from a precipitating electron flux, Joule heating, heating from the development of two-stream instability, and energy transfer between electrons and neutral molecules. The limitations of the thermodynamic-equilibrium approximation are shown, and the relative contributions of different heating sources are analyzed. Calculation results are compared with EISCAT data.
