Ground-based observations and observations with the Ariel-4 satellite show that ELF noise (the polar chorus) extends from the projection of the plasmapause to the daytime polar cusp, where the noise intensity drops drastically, by 30-50 dB. At ground observatories, located near the projection of this drop, the ELF-noise intensity can differ by a factor of 2-3 over distances of 250 km. Wideband irregular VLF bursts at these latitudes have a maximum of occurrence at postnoon hours and appear to be generated in the region of high-latitude field-aligned currents issuing from the ionosphere.
