The successive development of thermal convection in a rotating spherical shell heated from below has been studied. It has been indicated that the convection properties strongly differ within and outside a Taylor cylinder. The distributions of the kinetic energy, helicity, temperature, and differential rotation in these regions are presented. The consequences for the geodynamo theory and interpretation of geomagnetic observations are considered.
