We propose XMM-Newton observations of CGCG 049-033, a unique radio galaxy conta- ining a highly polarized giant radio jet and a single radio lobe. The peculiar radio structure of the radio galaxy implies a highly unusual hot-gas environment. SDSS images and spectra show that the host galaxy is the dominant member of a group of galaxies interacting with the nearby poor cluster Abell 2040. Our proposed observations will characterise the environment of the radio source and determine why it produces the observed radio structures. By determining physical conditions in the external medium, we will investigate the confinement of this large-scale jet. Finally, we will search for any evidence of X-ray emission from the jet itself.
