The status of nuclear physics is reviewed. The focus is on outstanding questions related to the structure of atomic nuclei. It becomes clear that many of the gaps in our knowledge concern the properties of nuclei far from stability. Progress thus requires beams of radioactive nuclei. The two methods that have been developed so far are described. In Europe major facilities of both types, FAIR and SPIRAL2, are now in the early stages of design and construction. Their main features and experimental programmes are described.
