We present results from new optical and X-ray data of two selected ULXs.
A recent VLT observation shows that NGC 1313 X-2 is a high mass X-ray
binary with a very massive donor, while a new XMM plus archival XMM/RXTE
data of M 82 X-1 represent the most revealing timing data for a ULX to
date.
