IT is well known that the striation separation in the electrical discharge in gases varies with the radius of the discharge tube and the pressure of the gas. The exact relation between these factors was first investigated by Wehner (Ann. der Phys., 32, p. 49; 1910), who gave as a result of experiments with hydrogen and nitrogen the relation where S is the striation separation in mm., r the radius of the tube in mm., and P the pressure of the gas in mm. of mercury. C was a constant for both gases with a value of approximately 2, and m a constant which varied with the nature of the gas. For hydrogen, m=0.53, and for nitrogen, m=0.32. Further experiments were carried out by Neubert (Ann. der Phys., 42, p. 1454; 1913), in which he used hydrogen free from any impurities and found the same law to hold.
