An aberrationless approximation of beam propagation is employed to analyze beam focusing by an intertial adaptive system with control-channel lag. It is shown that with control by beam width at the receiver, the inertia of the system reduces speed and increases mode composition. In the case of control by peak intensity, inertia can improve system performance in a number of cases. Conditions, frequencies, and damping increments are determined. The results of approximate and exact analyses are compared. Their good agreement is shown.
