It is shown that double inflation with an intermediate delay stage generates gravitational waves with a modulated spectrum whose observation can be unambiguous evidence in favor of the field theory that admits such a scenario. In addition, it is shown that a comparison of the heights of neighboring maxima can give information about the equation of state of the matter that predominates at the intermediate stage.
