The existing data base on the total He abundance and the ionized He/ionized H rations (He+/H+) for galactic H II regions is discussed.Typical ratios are only accurate to 20 percent, with the abundance generally being about 11.3 percent, a figure that may be too high in low-excitation H II regions. Measurements of the abundance gradient across a galactic disk indicate that the He+/H+ ratio changes within 7 kpc of galactic centers, where metallicity could increase. It is concluded that the galactic H II regions may not be suitable for determining the primordial He abundance, based on currently available data and theoretical modelling.
