The null geodesics in the space-time generated by a cosmic string carrying a wave pulse are examined. The pulse produces a deflection of the light ray, both in the plane orthogonal to the string and in the direction of the string, which we calculate to first order in the magnitude of the pulse. As the pulse propagates along the string it will cause the observed positions of stars behind the string to change in time. This induced motion is calculated to first order.
