Acceleration of protons and heavy ions in a reconnecting current sheet (RCS), which forms as a consequence of coronal transient, CME, or filament eruption in the corona, is advocated as a possible mechanism of relativistic particle generation during the late phase of γ-ray flares. The important feature of the mechanism suggested is that neither the maximum energy nor the acceleration rate depend upon the particle mass.
