Different models of the symmetric ring current (DR) are used to calculate magnetic-field variations on the earth surface at equatorial latitudes during the intense magnetic storm of August 27-30, 1978. The standard deviation of observed and calculated values of DR differs for different models. Using the example of the midlatitude Panagiurishte Observatory, it is shown that better agreement between observed and calculated magnetic-field variations can be achieved by taking into account magnetic fields of the three-dimensional current system consisting of ionospheric and field-aligned currents.
