Spectroscopic follow-up gives the the most crucial data necessary to decipher the true nature of a transient. A spectrum can help unambiguously identify a transient by revealing its distance, physical state and composition. We have undertaken a systematic search of optical transients in the glaring luminosity gap between novae and supernovae with the Palomar Transient Factory. This survey systematically targets local galaxy-light concentrations over a large area in the sky and is unique in its depth and cadence. In particular, taking exposures every night probes an unexplored phase space, in which there are few empirical constraints but interesting theoretical expectations for fast transients in the gap. A rapidly fading novel transient warrants rapid follow-up. In turn, rapid follow-up helps plan the most optimal multiwavelength campaign (Radio to X-ray). We propose for two rapid-response target-of-opportunity triggers on the Gemini-South telescope.
