Quantitative color analysis of Viking Orbiter MS images has identified two spatially coherent regions of unique hue, possibly crystalline ferric oxides-bearing, among the interior layered deposits in western Candor Chasma. The color could be explained by a small increase in either the crystallinity or the abundance of hematite. Water is implied by iron oxides' formation, and further suggests that the mineralization occurred through the secondary alteration of preexisting rocks by ponded surface water or groundwater seepage.
