Scientific paper

The organization of the International Magnetospheric Study is described, and IMS research goals are explained. IMS, organized in 1969 by COSPAR and Special Committee on Solar Terrestrial Physics (SCOSTEP) of the ICSU, distributes a monthly newsletter of proposed research projects and research notes, and the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, in coordination with IMS, provides information on satellite orbits and magnetospheric boundary crossings. A background description of the magnetosphere is presented, and research topics such as magnetosphere substorms, wave-particle interactions, and the transfer of charged particles and energy from the solar wind into the magnetosphere are discussed. GEOS and ISEE satellite missions are considered.
