An explicit treatment of particle transport is presented for the three types of plasmasphere arising in the Jovian magnetosphere. The plasmaspheres have their origin in the positive ion flux from the planetary ionosphere, in the ionization of the atmospheres and neutral particle tori of the Jovian satellites, and in the ionization of the neutral interstellar medium within the planetary magnetosphere. Recombination, radial transport and field-aligned flux into the Jovian atmosphere are among the loss mechanisms analyzed for the plasmaspheres. In terms of mass density, the Io-derived plasmasphere should dominate; in terms of number density it may also dominate, provided the photoelectron flux is in diffusive equilibrium with the atmosphere.
