An improved treatment of compressed atoms allows one to determine the equation of state of a white dwarf. The results for the mass-radius relation are qualitatively and quantitatively different from the ones obtained following the traditional derivations. The critical mass has a lower value, and, to the same value of the equilibrium mass, corresponds a lower value of the radius of the star.
