Using the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope, the authors have observed the 6 cm H2CO (111→110) absorption line against the continuum sources G 49.5-0.4 and G 49.4-0.3 (W51A). The observed profiles show a marked variation in both shape and optical depth. Conspicuous opacity enhancements on a linear scale size of 0.1 to 0.3 pc are observed in the area. The opacity enhancements are interpreted as being caused by clumps in the molecular material overlying the continuum sources. Evidence for an interaction between the ionized gas of component b(G 49.5-0.4) and the nearby high velocity stream has been found. Based on the observations a schematic representation of the spatial distribution of the different molecular complexes, and their associated H II regions, is proposed.
