Different components and successive stages of type IV bursts are discussed, and modifications to the schematic representation of well developed type IV bursts are proposed. It is shown that different components do not necessarily correspond to different electron populations. Consideration is given to the possible existence of two physically distinct acceleration mechanisms and it is noted that there may be one corresponding to an injection/acceleration site located relatively low in the corona producing electrons continuously or repetitively throughout the event's development while there may be another one corresponding to in situ acceleration during shock wave passage.
