Topics related to the study of the differential rotation of the earth are discussed. Consideration is given to the main hydrodynamic and electrodynamic equations governing differential rotation, with emphasis on the 'inverse' problem of inferring motions in the fluid core from observations of secular changes in the terrestrial magnetic field. The contribution of GARP data to recent improvements in the measurement of differential rotation is also considered.
