Techniques used to determine total hadronic cross sections at sq rt s = about 50 TeV from cosmic-ray air-shower data are reviewed and analyzed, with a focus on the models of hadronic interactions employed. Typical data are presented graphically; the sensitivity of the results to model parameters is discussed; procedures for estimating primary composition are described; and the role of hard scattering in hadronic interactions is explored in detail. It is argued that approximate hadronic scaling holds at high energies, so that scaling violations are mainly confined to the central fragmentation region and have little effect on the determination of cross sections. The correctness of the scaling-type models used to interpret the results of the Fly's Eye experiments (Baltrusaitas et al., 1984) is confirmed.
