Scientific paper

First results are reported of a spectroscopic survey to study the
continuum energy distribution of very low resolution of southern old
novae and the intensities of low and high excitation lines at 3000-9000
A of the largest possible number of such objects at different evolution
stages. A flare of the very slow nova CN Vel is reported.
