The strength and spectrum of gravitational waves produced by core-collapse supernovae are poorly understood. It is not known, in particular, whether supernovae can be detected by interferometric gravitational-wave detectors such as LIGO and VIRGO. As a step towards answering this question, numerical simulations of gravitational waves from core-collapse supernovae have been carried out in the Newtonian/quadrupole approximation using both three-dimensional and axisymmetric numerical codes. One of the key issues to be discussed is whether a neutron star, formed from stellar collapse, can aquire enough rotational kinetic energy to become unstable to secular or dynamical instabilities. A second issue to be discussed is whether three-dimensional inhomogeneities in the pre-collapse stellar core contribute significantly to the gravitational-wave signal.
