A new method for laser heating of minerals in a diamond cell with two essential differences to previous work is applied in which single crystals of olivine, forsterite, and enstatite were heated to over 2000 K between 100 and 250 kbar with a 120 W CO2-laser in a diamond anvil cell using a hydrostatic, inert gas pressure medium. The phase boundaries between olivine or forsterite and beta-phase and between gamma-phase and perovskite were accurately bracketed. A high-power CO2 laser, and a different diamond anvil cell geometry where thin (10-micron) single crystal mineral samples are embedded in an inert gas medium (argon) of low thermal conductivity are used. The combination of the laser's high power, the high absorption coefficient of minerals at 10.6 microns, and the low thermal conductivity of the hydrostatic pressure medium make it possible to heat samples with a defocussed laser beam over a large area (about 100 microns diameter) to above 3000 K with low temperature gradients in both radial and axial directions.
