The Axford-Hines hypothesis is used in a theoretical investigation of
electric-field generation in the magnetosphere. An exact solution of the
dissipative MHD equations is obtained with application to plasma flow in
the plasma sheet. The solutions are extended to the case of
reconnection, and the effect of the ionosphere is taken into account.
