Northern and southern hemisphere underground cosmic ray telescope data gathered during the period 1965-83 are used to evaluate the cosmic ray density gradient (CRDG) relative to the ecliptic as a function of the behavior of the interplanetary magnetic field. The telescope (muon) data are treated to obtain yearly cosmic ray solar diurnal variation vectors away from and toward the sun, and the anisotropy in the difference between the two values is taken as the perpendicular component. Comparisons are also made with the north-south asymmetry in the sun over the same period as a function of flare index data and type II bursts. A statistically significant increase in northern hemisphere solar activity in the period 1959-70 was associated with an enhanced southern CRDG measured by telescopes in both terrestrial hemispheres. After the solar polarity reversal in 1969-71, a northern enhancement was recorded for the CRDG by northern terrestrial telescopes and a southern enhancement by southern telescopes. The data could be accounted for by a symmetry which follows the solar polarity and an asymmetry in the CRDG which follows the asymmetry in the hemispheric solar activity.
