It now seems that the morphology-density relation is established by processes operating within groups, and only subsequently incorporated into clusters. The discovery that the HI-deficiency observed in galaxies within compact groups is related to the presence of a hot intergalactic medium, offers a clue to the processes involved in the transformation of the galaxy population. We report the results of VLA mapping of four ultracompact groups which are strongly HI deficient, and of Chandra imaging for two of these from AO-6. This clearly shows the potential of this study to elucidate the physics of gas removal, and we request ACIS observations of the second half of our sample.
