A statistical study of variable stars brighter than m = 10 at maximum has been undertaken. It is based upon the Fourth Edition of the General Catalogue of Variable Stars (Moscow, 1985), first part, which contains the variables located in the constellations Andromeda, Antlia, etc. to Orion. For a total of 18151 stars, 2207 (12%) are brighter than m = 10 at maximum. 1240 out of this number (i.e. more than half) have been observed photoelectrically.
