After many years of investigation the debate about the source of the diffuse ion population in the region upstream of the Earth's bow shock remains unresolved. While some researchers argue for a magnetosphere-accelerated-subsequent leakage model, another group proposes a solar wind - at the bow shock accelerated theory. With the CLUSTER II multi-spacecraft fleet operational since the end of January and crossing extensively the magnetopause bow-shock region in the first three months of 2001, we use the RAPID spectrometer on board CLUSTER II to shed some light on this question. The energetic particle spectrometer RAPID is an advanced ion spectrometer with a position sensitive time-of-flight (T) and energy (E) detection system capable of determining the mass of incident energetic ions in an energy range from 50 to 1500 keV. It is combined with a second detector system, the imaging electron spectrometer (IES), which allows the detection of electrons in an energy range of 30 to 450 keV.
