We present high time resolution Wind 3DP plasma and magnetic field observations to compare and contrast the characteristics of foreshock cavities and hot flow anomalies (HFAs). Both types of events are produced by wave-particle interaction in the Earth's foreshock. Both contain regions of hot tenuous, diamagnetic plasma bounded by narrow regions of greatly enhanced densities and magnetic field strengths. Boundary normals on the leading edges generally point perpendicular to the Sun-Earth line, whereas those on the trailing edge point sunward. Whereas HFAs occur at the intersection of some IMF discontinuities with the bow shock, foreshock cavities occur whenever narrow bands of IMF lines intercept the bow shock. Whereas HFAs contain greatly heated ions and electrons, the ions within foreshock cavities are only modestly heated and the electrons are not heated at all. Whereas flows within HFAs are decelerated and deflected to point nearly perpendicular to the Sun-Earth line, flows within foreshock cavities remain nearly antisunward. Finally, whereas HFAs are rare, foreshock cavities are common.
