Cosmological properties of a light neutralino χ are studied in the context of the minimal supersymmetric model. It is found that the relic mass density of a general superposition of gauginos and higgsinosis generally very small, while for predominantly higgsino-like or gaugino-like neutralinos it is typically close to the critical mass density. The existence of even one light sfermion (mf >~ mχ) dramatically reduces the relic mass density of gaugino-like relics and makes them cosmologically also less attractive. Other criteria place an upper bound of about 150 GeV on the mass of the lightest neutralino, and exclude also higgsino-like neutralinos.
