The large scale distribution and kinematics of the atomic hydrogen phase, the molecular phase and of the ionized hydrogen phase of the interstellar medium in the late type spiral galaxy NGC 6946 are reviewed. Special emphasis is made on new results including in particular the large scale survey of the 12CO (J=1-0) and 12CO (J=2-1) emission recently made with the IRAM 30 m telescope.
