The HXS and GRS detectors on Yohkoh observed this X5.7 class flare beginning at ~10:20 UT, ~4 m before the peak in soft X-rays. The hard X rays and γ rays peaked ~3 m later at ~10:27 UT. Solar γ -ray emission lasted until ~10:40 UT. Impact of high-energy ions at the Sun is revealed by the γ -ray lines from de-excitation of C, O, and Ne and from neutron capture that are visible above the bremsstrahlung continuum. This flare was associated with the largest solar energetic particle to reach Earth since October 1989. The GRS also observed γ -ray lines produced by the impact of energetic particles with the Earth's atmosphere at high latitudes beginning about 06 UT on 15 July. The spectrum is similar to that detected from the 1989 October 20 event by the SMM spectrometer. We discuss detailed observations of both of the flare and particle event. We discuss how line ratios can be used to estimate the spectra of particles that impacted the Sun's and Earth's atmospheres. The latter can be compared with particle measurements outside the magnetosphere. As this flare occurred near the center of the solar disk it may be possible to observe the Doppler shift of de-excitation lines discovered by the SMM spectrometer, even though the resolution of the GRS is quite modest.
