Giotto, launched in 1985 on a mission to comet Halley survived the encounter damaged, but in operable condition. This paper summarizes the damage inflicted and its operational implications. The extended mission, chosen after comet Halley fly-by, was to perform a large orbit maneuver to bring Giotto into an Earth return trajectory. After a 4-year hibernation period, the spacecraft would be re-activated and an Earth fly-by performed. This would put Giotto, after a second hibernation spell, on course for a 10 July 1992 encounter with comet Grigg-Skjellerup. The paper describes these operations and subsequent activities.
