We propose that the fast solar wind emanates from magnetic funnels formed in the boundaries of the chromospheric network pattern. A steady and simplified model of the evolution of the solar wind is formulated. It involves its origin in an ionisation layer deep in the funnel, the expansion of the flow and heating and acceleration arising from wave-particle interactions (e.g. ion-cyclotron wave absorption) in a realistic model of the magnetic field. The flow is characterised by very hot in temperatures and rapid acceleration leading to high flow speeds within a few solar radii. We also discuss the effect of plumes and how their presence may obscure the intrinsic properties of the fast solar wind near its source.
