A model for estimation of magma residence times in volcanic eruptions has been developed. Residence times are estimated using the rate of change of isotopic or incompatible element ratios in lavas. Fourier analysis of the geochemical signal damped and delayed by the magma reservoir combined with eruption rates also provides a robust estimate for the residence time of magmas in deep reservoirs and the size of magma chambers. The magma chambers are likely to be distinct from the geophysically defined magma bodies.
