6025 Interactions With Solar Wind Plasma And Fields
Scientific paper
The X-ray emissions from the atmospheres of small comets are investigated, and the spectra and brightness distributions resulting from the charge transfer mechanism are calculated. The spectra of X-ray photons emitted from core regions of the cometary coma are shown to differ from the X-ray spectra of large comets because of collisions with the neutral gas and dust particles. Quenching collisions of excited solar wind ions in dense comae are taken into account in evaluating the relative intensities of spectral lines. Spectra of cometary X-ray emission are calculated for typical compositions of the solar wind. The influence of cometary dust on ion X-ray emissions is analyzed and X-ray spectra are calculated for cometary atmospheres for varying ratios of the gas and dust production rates.
