Fluxes of upward moving energetic oxygen and nitrogen atoms are calculated near the exobase of the terrestrial atmosphere. The degradation of the distributions of nascent energetic atoms is studied using Monte Carlo simulations of collisions of fast atoms with the ambient gas. Parameters for Monte Carlo modeling of O-O and N-O collisions are obtained from quantal calculations of the differential cross sections, the energy-transfer rates, and the energy spectra of the recoil fast atoms. The fluxes of energetic N and O atoms produced in the thermosphere are calculated for different solar and atmospheric conditions. The fraction of non-thermal atoms in the oxygen geocorona is obtained for altitudes of 400 - 600 km.
