From the observations by PIXIE and UVI on board the POLAR satellite we derive global maps of the precipitating electron energy spectra from less than 1 keV to 100 keV. Based on the electron spectra we infer the height profiles of the resulting ionisation within each picture element of about 700 km by 700 km size. Photoionization is also included in these calculations. We then generate global maps of the height-integrated Pedersen and Hall conductivities. In this paper we will present results from a study of how the conductivities vary through the different phases of a substorm. We will also discuss possible implications of the conductivity changes on ionospheric currents, geomagnetic disturbances and Joule heating.
