Magnetospheric cusps serve as the only regions for the particles of solar wind origin to enter directly into the earth's upper atmosphere. The investigation of these particles provide useful information on the nature of sun-earth interactions. One of the manifestations of the cusp particles in visible spectrum is known to be the intensification of the atomic oxygen 630.0nm airglow emission. Until recently ground-based optical observations of the cusp have not been possible during daytime due to the presence of strong solar background continuum which is orders of magnitude brighter when compared with the aurora. At Boston university we built a new instrument called, HIRISE (High Resolution Imaging Spectrograph using Echelle grating), capable of making daytime optical measurements from ground. HIRISE has been successfully used to understand the Ring effect variability and obtaining precursors to low-latitude equatorial irregularities from Chile (Chakrabarti et al., These proceedings). Using HIRISE we carried out the first ever ground based daytime cusp measurements from Sondrestromfjord, Greenland during January 2001. Six days of optical data has been obtained during this campaign. Signatures of daytime auroral arcs, polar cap patches are also seen in the optical measurements. Simultaneous incoherent scatter radar data is also available on most of the days. We will report on some of the first results obtained during this campaign.
