Periodically spaced fluvial channels are observed in various geomorphic settings, such as mountain belts, fault blocks, submarine canyons, and possibly features on Mars. For one particular example, a seepage problem, we determine the origin of this spacing phenomenon using observations on the beach, sapping experiments, numerical simulations, and analytical theory. In the studied example the spacing between channels is determined at the initial stage of channel formation. The channels are explained not merely in terms of the hydrostatic pressure distribution beneath a constant watertable, but small height variations of the watertable play an essential role. Inclination of the watertable perpendicular to the channels occurs over a distance much larger than the width of the initial channel.
