Using simplified quantitative models of the Earth's composition, its core formation (including discussion of the mega-impact hypothesis), the fate of iron, mobile substances and water, the release of radiogenic heat, gravitational and tidal energy, mantle convection and polar wandering are considered. Plate tectonics is treated as a consequence of mantle convection caused by gravitational differentiation of heavy and light substances (essentially by growth of the iron core).
