Factors of both solar and interstellar origin giving rise to a pronounced 3D structure of the expanding solar wind and thus of the global configuration of the heliosphere are discussed. The present observational knowledge of these structures is reviewed, and theoretical models of these solar wind structures are analyzed, with emphasis on the mechanisms by which interstellar imprints on the actual type of solar wind expansion can be envisaged. It is demonstrated that both the anomalous cosmic ray diffusion into the solar wind and the high energetic jet electrons originating at the shock and moving inwards up to an inner critical point at around 20 AU influence the solar wind expansion beyond 20 AU.
