Features of a multipurpose instrument designed for the Spacelab on board a Shuttle flight to measure the total and possible long-term variation of the solar spectral irradiance are described. The instrument contains three spectrometers, three detectors, and in-flight calibration lamps. Sensitivities of the spectrometers are listed, noting the capability of recording the total solar spectrum from 170-3200 nm in 15 min, with an accuracy of 1/100 nm. Procedures for maintaining instrument accuracy for the years before actual flight are reviewed, including preflight comparisons with two absolute radiometers.
